Cycle sport is competitive physical activity using bicycles.
There are several categories of bicycle racing including road bicycle racing, time trialling, cyclo-cross, mountain bike racing, track cycling, BMX, and cycle speedway.

Cycling, or bicycle racing, is one of the most popular sports in the world. Cycling is especially popular in Europe where millions of fans follow the feats of great cyclists. Cycling has been an event in the Olympic Games since the modern games originated in 1896.
There are three chief kinds of cycling—track races, road races, and motocross races. Each kind requires a distinct type of bicycle.
Track races are held on oval tracks called velodromes. On most cycling tracks, both ends of the track slope inward at a steep angle. Velodromes may be located indoors or outside. Most championship events take place outdoors on tracks ranging from 250 to 500 metres. Indoor tracks range from 185 to 200 metres.
Championship events are held for individuals and for teams of two or four cyclists. These races can be individual sprints (short races) as short as 800 metres or team races 100 kilometres long. Some races are time trials, in which racers are timed over a set distance. A pursuit is a special kind of time trial that starts with two individuals or teams at opposite sides of the track. The winner is the individual or team that finishes the course first or passes an opponent before the race ends.
A track bicycle has no brakes and only one gear. The cyclist slows down or stops the bike by pushing back on the pedals. The cyclist may also press a gloved hand against the front tyre to stop.
Road races are the original, and most popular, forms of cycling. Hundreds of cyclists may start a race. They cycle over a course between two towns, or around a specific route for a set number of laps.
The most popular road race is the annual Tour de France in which more than 100 contestants race through Europe. The Tour lasts about 24 days and covers about 4,000 kilometres. The distance is divided into sections called stages. Cyclists are timed in each stage. The cyclist who completes all the stages in the lowest total time is the winner.
The bicycles used in road races have frames made of special lightweight alloy tubing. They have brakes and handmade narrow tyres. These bicycles have a gear system that includes a derailleur, a mechanism that shifts the bicycle chain from one gear to another.
Bicycle motocross races became popular in the 1970's, especially among young people. The races are often called BMX bicycle moto-cross). They are held on dirt tracks less than 400 metres long. The tracks have many bumps and sharp turns. The cyclists ride bicycles that have small wheels and wide tyres to help prevent
them from slipping in the turns. Bicycle motocross racers wear hard helmets and padded clothing for protection against falls, which occur frequently. See also Bicycle; Olympic Games (table: Cycling).

Olympic star Laura Trott opened up on Good Morning Britain to reject claims that her sister Emma is jealous of her success in the Games, and about her "surreal" new celebrity status.  Following her sister's interview with Good Morning Britain earlier this week, in which Emma was accused of coming across as 'jealous,' Laura spoke out to support her. "She's been my idol growing up for as long as I can remember and I know she will support me through thick and thin. She was the first person that I spoke to after winning and we didn't talk about gold medals, we spoke about everything else but, and I couldn't be more happy that she is the way she is with me," she said…
Team GB broke records at the weekend by winning five gold medals in a single day, moving them into second place – just ahead of China and behind the United States. Here's everything you need to know about some of the Olympic love stories…
Laura explained to MailOnline: "He was acting weird for a good half an hour and I was like, 'What is the matter with him?' And then he walked over to our bookshelf and got this ring out and got down on one knee."...

The Keirin is a thrilling cycling race where riders are initially paced up to speed behind a special motoped
before launching their final attacks from top speed in the last 600 metres.
Jason Kenny equalled Sir Chris Hoy's British record of six Olympic gold medals on a sensational night in Rio. The 28-year-old won a dramatic keirin, that twice had to be restarted because of infringements, to add to his team sprint and individual sprint victories. Kenny has won seven medals in total - his one silver coming at the 2008 Beijing Olympics, when he finished second to Hoy in the individual sprint. GB's track cyclists won six golds, four silvers and a bronze in the velodrome. Kenny was cheered on by fiancee Laura Trott, who had earlier retained her omnium title to become the first British woman to win four Olympic gold medalsHis victory was Britain's 19th of the Rio Olympics - equalling the gold haul from Beijing - and the 49th British medal overall. Matthijs Buchli of the Netherlands took silver and bronze went to Malaysia's Azizulhasni Awang

KUALA LUMPUR: National track cyclist Mohd Azizulhasni Awang who had an excellent run this year, is now ranked fourth in the latest UCI (International Cycling Union) would keirin ranking. Packed with power despite his diminutive physic, the Terengganu born Azizulhasni who is referred to as PocketRocketman in the cycling fraternity, is tipped to be among Malaysian athletes who can deliver a medal at the Rio Olympics. With the world's biggest sporting event due to start tomorrow, the Terengganu rider is busy with his preparations for the race, using racing simulation. Azizulhasni who is now in Portugal with another Olympic-bound cyclist, Fatehah Mustapha for training said, the stint had shown much positive development for them. He said the training camp arranged by coach John Beasley had improved their performance significantly. "Training and preparations for the Olympics had progressed smoothly and with less than a week to fly to Rio, the session was very useful to me and Fatehah," he said. In the 2012 London Olympics, Azizulhasni took part in two events, keirin and sprint compared to only one in Rio. He will be in action for the keirin event at Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro on Aug 16 while Fatehah would be appearing in the sprint event on Aug 14. Youth and Sports Minister Khairy Jamaluddin had mentioned Azizulhasni's name as among athletes to deliver medals at the Rio Olympics, the others being badminton ace Datuk Lee Chong Wei and Pandalela Rinong in diving. --Bernama

Azizulhasni is the World No. 1 Again
Wednesday, 3 February 2016 | MYT 9:29 PM
KUALA LUMPUR: Azizulhasni Awang will head to next month’s Track World Championships in London as the world’s No. 1 ranked men’s keirin cyclist.
The 28-year-old Azizul reached the zenith of cycling in the latest UCI world rankings in keirin with a 508-point total. This is not accounting the points accumulated at the recent Asian Championships, where he finished third.
The Melbourne-based cyclist, who was third previously, is only four points ahead of reigning world champion Francois Pervis of France. Kiwi Edward Dawkins, the silver medallist at last year’s World Championships, is third on 494 points.
This is the second time Azizulhasni grabbed the world No. 1 spot, after 2010.
“It’s a big honour for myself and for the country to be ranked world No. 1 in an Olympic year,” said Azizul.
“It’s the recognition of the hard work I put in training and competitions ... the process in getting there,” said the Terengganu-born cyclist.
Azizul now hopes to maintain his top spot until the Rio de Janeiro Olympics in August.
“I won the bronze medal in the World Championships in Paris last year. It will be a big boost to my Olympic gold hopes if I can get on the podium in London again,” said Azizul, who is already assured of an Olympic berth in keirin as Asia’s top-ranked cyclist.
Despite having to miss five weeks of training due to flu and a muscle tear, Azizul managed to claim two bronzes in the sprint and keirin at the Asian Championships in Japan last week.
National head coach John Beasley hopes Azizul will be in a better physical condition for the London World Championships.
“This (No. 1 ranking) is good news for Malaysia. Azizul had to overcome sickness and injury before the Asian Championships. I really didn’t expect him to come away with a medal, let alone two.
“I’m sure he will be in tip-top condition for London,” said the Australian coach.
